Asia

I lived in Asia for 15 years and have seen how they deal with problems. The first thing they do is work really hard. Then, they work harder; they actually die from overwork. The produce heaps of 'stuff' and I have no doubt they will survive the current economic woes and emerge far stronger. Japanese and Koreans work hard, produce a lot, save a lot, and spend a lot. Every home has all mod-cons so further spending is unnecessary, which leads to saving. China is rising fast - Japanese and Koreans are studying Chinese. Do you see Americans studying Chinese? Japanese and Koreans study Chinese and know how to work alongside them. They know how to get good deals. They haven't shifted their entire operations to China because they are not that stupid. They keep their best technology on the home front because they are smart. The Chinese aim to 'gather' that technology because they too are smart. And so it goes round and round.

One Chinese guy I met said he bought his Levis because he liked America and wanted to go there. Then, he discovered there were no Levis made in America - that they were all made in China. He now thinks Americans are stupid - a rough generalization, perhaps, but that is what he told me.

Predicted, and already happening, is that Asians will restructure themselves such that they deal more with each other than with America or Europe. Indeed, if you want cues on how to deal with the financial crisis, a study of Asia is in order. I suspect even the gangster state North Korea will do better - excepting that the fake dollars they produce will lose value as America prints ever more 'real' fiat ones.
